I’m Still Here

Why does time seem to go faster the older you get? It seems ridiculous that I haven’t posted anything since February. It’s weird, because I am constantly writing in my head, but it seems to stop there.

I wrote a really long essay in March, but the subject was too sad, so I decided not to share. It seems that every time I try to sit down and write, instead I pick up markers and a coloring book to “clear my thoughts”, and two hours later I haven’t written a word.

Other than a few bright spots, much of 2026 has been rather hum drum, and also rather sad. Maybe that explains why I keep getting lost in coloring books. When I have a marker in my hand, my brain disengages. But, enough of that! It’s time to jump back in.

As far as life updates go, I am managing the Celiac diagnoses. I’m not great but I am doing better than I was, so there’s that. On the bright side, I have lost 30 pounds and feel better about the way I look. Gotta find those silver linings where we can!

For a while I was struggling with whether or not I wanted to find a different job, but I have decided that I really do not want to work more. I am good where I am and plan to retire (for real this time) at the end of next year.

Now, to address the sad. We lost two dear friends this year.

Our friend Grant passed away from complications of cancer in February. It was horrible and tragic, and God, I miss his hugs! Grant had the best hugs. You just felt love radiating into you whenever he wrapped his arms around you. He was kind, and witty, sarcastic, and brilliant. There will always be a hole in the lives of all who loved him.

Me and Grant

And then in September, our friend Mike died suddenly. He was only 61, and his passing really brought home the reality that every day can be your last. We met Mike and his family when we lived in Massachusetts, and we just clicked. We spent Thanksgivings together when our kids were younger, and even after we all moved on to new places, we made a point of getting together as often as we could. We were all far from home, and these people became our family. We will forever miss Mike’s sense of adventure, his humor, his loyalty, and his huge, loving heart.

Dear Mike

Now that I have made myself cry, I am going to end this one. I promise to be more upbeat next time because the year hasn’t been all bad. We actually had a fun and busy summer, and I will tell you all about it next week.

Until then…
